Sugar and spice, and all things nice.
The cutting of the wedding cake, and sharing the first slice, was once seen as a symbol of the support that the Bride and Groom will have towards each other for years to come as a married couple. Nowadays, wedding cakes are becoming more and more of a show piece, with elaborate creations, and spectacular detailing. Some wedding cakes even look as though they have been designed by a mechanical engineer, or an architect, with bridges, fountains, and all types of structural attachments.
The Traditional cake
The traditional fruit-cake with ½ inch of marzipan topped with royal icing is now becoming a thing of the past. With a delicious selection of cakes, toppings, and fillings available, sticking to the traditional cake can seem a little too old fashioned.
The Traditional cake alternatives
Moist coconut cake, succulent carrot cake, ripe banana cake, and lemon and ginger cake are just a few of the tantalising options available.
The African and Caribbean cake
As with the traditional cake alternatives, African and Caribbean cakes are known for their combination of tropical fruit and vegetable ingredients, not to mention the dark rum fruit cake. Mango sponge cake, coconut and pineapple cake, sweet potato cake, and plantain cake, are just a few of the tropical options available.
The Asian, Vegetarian, and Vegan cake
Although the wedding cake is predominately a western tradition, more and more cake specialists are wising up to the needs of the Asian, Vegetarian, and Vegan religious and dietary requirements. There are a number of eggless sponge and fruit cakes that do not contain animal fats, nuts, alcohol, or egg substitutes, and use a variety of natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup.

Fillings and Frostings
With fillings and toppings ranging from silk fondants to royal icing, marzipan, fresh cream, butter icing, and lots more, sticking to one particular cake may not be to everyone's specification. So why not treat yourself and your guests to a selection of mouth-watering options by having a different type of cake for each layer of your master creation. Traditional fruit cake on the bottom layer of your cake stand, followed by carrot, and coconut or sponge for the following two layers will mean there's something for everyone.
Whatever you choose, make sure that you get your order in on time!
